Boiler scrappage scheme 'could help households save on bills'

8 January 2010

Any household that successfully applies for the government's boiler scrappage scheme could make substantial savings on its heating bills, it has been claimed.

Tom Lyon, Energy Expert at uSwitch.com, commented: "Installing a modern energy efficient boiler can save households up to £235 a year on heating bills. With the average boiler lifespan of 15 years this is a substantial saving on energy bills."

The price comparison site welcomed the introduction of the initiative, which kicked off on January 5th.

It is expected to help 125,000 homes in the UK, with the aim of reducing residential carbon emissions as well as saving people money on their heating bills.

Chancellor Alistair Darling unveiled the measures in the pre-Budget report last month.

Under the proposals, homeowners will be eligible for up to £400 towards the cost of a new boiler to replace old, inefficient models.

The project, designed to combat fuel poverty in the UK, is being run alongside the Warm Front Scheme and will receive £200 million in government funding.ADNFCR-1955-ID-19546694-ADNFCR
